We recently had a great chat on this subject: “choose your hard”.
Not much comes easy in life, and more often than not the choice will be between two things that feel hard.
Losing weight is hard. Being overweight can be hard too.
The choice is not always straightforward or easy, but here is what we think.
Each option will have pros and cons.
Choosing one over the other will bring some benefits.
The best thing we can do is weigh those pros, cons and benefits to determine where it’s best to devote our efforts.
When people come to us for weight loss, they have generally gone through this phase and are ready for the next.
Now that you have chosen your hard, our main goal is to help you make it feel a bit easier.
Weight loss doesn’t come easy to most, it requires effort, consistent work and sometimes little sacrifices.
So how can we help you?
- Break down your goal: let’s say you want to lose 20lb. Firstly, give yourself a realistic timeframe. 6 weeks might not be it, so allow yourself some time. Then break down that actual number. 20lb is a lot, bu it’s 2x10lb, or 4x5lb or 20x1lb. So start from aiming to lose a smaller amount of weight and then some more and then some more. It will add up and won’t feel as daunting.
- Do a stocktake of your lifestyle: weight loss comes down to a calorie deficit, which simply means that you need to burn more calories than you consume. Have a look at what you drink and eat, and how much you move. Where can you make small but meaningful changes? Some foods or drinks swaps can reduce your calorie intake (switching from fruit juice to sugar free squash, opting for lower fat dairy, and choosing white fish and meat more often than red are just a few ideas). Parking a little further away or going for a 10 minutes walk every day after lunch can easily add extra steps into your day. Opting for a 20 minutes workout a couple of times a week is a great starting point.
- Switch to positive thinking: start by focusing on the more. How can you eat more food? How can you get more fresh air and time for yourself? We are programmed to start thinking about all the things we need to cut out from our life while losing weight, but this can be really counterproductive. It makes the process a lot less enjoyable than it needs to be. And we want you to love the process!!
Sometimes the hardest thing of all is getting started. We stress so much about how things can be complicated, thinking of everything than can go wrong. But preparing for the worse has never helped anyone! And we can guarantee you that losing weight can be achievable AND ENJOYABLE!
