It can seem as if you spend the entire period from New Years to July preparing for the summer break only to spend the entire month of August eating your weight in ice-cream and sorely neglecting that gym subscription. However, fret not – not every break is as bad as Ross and Rachel, in fact, sometimes a break is exactly what your body needs. So if you are already panicking about the thought of getting back into the swing of things – sit back, relax and take a look at our helpful pointers on why you should have no regrets about August or fear for September.
- Our bodies deserve, nay….need a rest. So even if you didn’t quite manage to do any exercise over the holidays, then don’t worry – it probably gave your body the time it needs to repair tissue damage, strengthen the heart and other muscles and restore your depleted fuel reserves – basically helping you recover from fatigue. So you’re all ready for a new start come September.
- Your body is also far more intelligent than you know and will adjust the amount of mitochondria (a fancy way of saying energy cells) depending on how much you need. This is what causes your fitness levels to drop when you are away as your body is responding to the fact you are using less energy, however, once you get back into the swing of things – this will pick up pretty quickly.
- Now, the truth is fitness levels do decrease scarily quickly. However, thankfully the reverse is also true – they can be built back up in a matter of days, maybe a few weeks. So fret not – they’ll be back, baby. And if your holiday was anything like ours, you probably spent the majority of it chasing kids, so you may well have done more exercise than you think.
- We cannot lie, the first few sessions are going to hurt like hell. You are going to ache in places you probably forgot existed. However, that is totally normal and even for seasoned PTs like us who live for this stuff, after our first proper session back we suppressed the desire to alternately throw up and pass out. That is totally normal, so don’t be disheartened – take it slow if you need to, but you’ll be amazed how quickly your body will adjust. You may also suffer from “DOMs” – delayed onset muscle soreness which is basically caused by tiny microscopic tears (sounds way scarier than it is) and means you will be in a fair amount of pain 2 days after your first workout. Again, don’t worry – this is totally normal and is just your body readjusting.
- So now you are reassured, prepped and primed to quickly start your workout regime, feel free to come along to one of our sessions. We even have an extra special offer running for September where if you buy one loyalty card this month, you get another half price.
