It shocks us every year! It comes round so quick, there is so much food, cooking, lack of routine, no control and we start to feel bloated and desperate for a full week of NORMAL!
If all the ups and downs make you worry that you might lose all your good habits, don’t despair!
There has been plenty of research on how long it takes to build a habit. Despite what you might have heard, the results hugely vary!
So what makes a habit good enough to survive in the long term, despite the challenges?
SUSTAINABLE: this might sound predictable, but if a habit isn’t sustainable it won’t survive the easiest obstacle. Can you see yourself doing this thing for the next 6, 12, 24 months? If not, your chances of keeping it up are rather slim.
MEANINGFUL: why do you want this habit in place? How is it going to help you? Having reasons that really mean something to you will help you jump right back on track any time something gets in the way.
CONSISTENT: despite what you may believe, in order to make a habit stick you don’t have to repeat the behaviour day in and day out. You can miss days and still be successful. We always go on about how perfection is overrated, and the most guaranteed way to fail. This is another striking example. You don’t need to tick the box every single day in your calendar, just the majority of the time.
Now, the pressing question: how do you get started?
Here are a few tips you will find helpful:
HABIT STACKING: Build it on an existing habit. Let’s say you want to start taking some supplements. Keep them in the bathroom next to your toothbrush. Anytime you brush your teeth, you’ll have your handy reminder to take your supplements.
SET A REMINDER: nowadays, we’re glued to our phones. Let’s use them for something that might benefit us and our health. Setting a daily reminder won’t take more than a few seconds and will help you towards success.
HAVE AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY: make sure those that are closest to you know. Tell them what you are trying to achieve and why. Then just watch them nudge and remind you at regular intervals! It might get annoying, but it will be extremely helpful.
